The Main Event’s first ever Jerusalem Pub Quiz took place on the evening of Monday 7th May 2007 and now looks set to become a regular feature in the Jerusalem calendar.
Nadin Pub, in the centre of Jerusalem, with its traditional wooden interior, was the perfect setting and the 95 pub quiz participants filled the venue to its capacity. In all, there were 18 teams of up to 6 people, each competing for the title of Jerusalem Pub Quiz Champions. Every team had been asked to submit a humorous team name and there were plenty of witty offerings including ‘Del-boy and The Plonkers’, ‘The Shazzaroonies’ and ‘Tonight’s Winners’ (who unfortunately did not live up to their name!).
The competition was split into 5 rounds of 10 questions, with topics such as ‘TV & Film’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Jews in the News’. There was also a Music Round in which the opening few seconds of a song were played and teams had to identify the song’s title and artist. Unfortunately, the atmosphere in the room was such that, on hearing the beginning of one of their favourite tunes, some participants couldn’t help themselves from bursting into song, often giving away vital clues to their opponents!
Whilst the different rounds of questions were going on, each team had various other challenges to contend with. A marathon round, containing 10 anagrams of celebrity names and 20 celebrity photos was given to each team at the beginning of the night. Teams were given until the end of the half-time interval to identify all 30 celebrities in order to gain those vital extra points to boost their total pub quiz score. The Main Event also introduced two other factors to enhance the excitement of the quiz; The ‘Joker’ option, in which every team could nominate their preferred round as their ‘Joker’ and score double points for that round, and the unique ‘SMS the Quizmaster’ feature, in which teams could specially request the answer to any one question that they were struggling with and the answer would be sent directly to their cell/mobile phone by The Main Event Quizmaster.
By the end of the quiz, there could be only one winner and the victorious team, by a huge margin of 11 points, was ‘Team Achzavah’, ably led by Ahuvah Berger. The team were presented with 3 prizes; the huge Jerusalem Pub Quiz Trophy, 1000 shekels in a bundle of fifty crisp 20 shekel notes, and free entry to the next Jerusalem Pub Quiz with the opportunity to defend their title as Jerusalem Pub Quiz Champions.
Everyone agreed that the first ever Jerusalem Pub Quiz had been a true success. Laughter echoed around the pub throughout the evening and the atmosphere was only enhanced by the competitive edge that the quiz generated.
The Main Event has already received many requests for a second quiz so ‘Team Achzavah’ should enjoy their success while it lasts because, before long, the title of Jerusalem Pub Quiz Champions will surely be up for grabs once more!
